Justice is Served

Save the DATE: September 21, 2010

Justice is Served focuses attention on the service of Dallas CASA volunteers and increasing public awareness about the issue of child abuse.

The trademark of this unique event is the attendance of state and federal judges who act as celebrity waiters, graciously serving "just desserts" to the tables. In 2009, 36 judges participated in the dinner.

The annual event honors a community leader or leaders for their significant contributions to improving the lives of children in the Dallas community. The honoree is recognized with the prestigious Judge Barefoot Sanders Champion of Children award.

The recipient of the 2009 award was Texas Supreme Court Justice Harriet O'Neill. Justice O'Neill was honored for her special interest in improving the court system for families and children in foster care. She spearheaded the creation in 2007 of the Permanent Judicial Commission for Children, Youth and Families, which she leads. The commission brings together child welfare system stakeholders to improve how courts handle child abuse cases and improve child welfare policies. The Commission has become a national model for similar organizations.

“CASA volunteers truly help the judges, the court process and most of all the children they speak for. It is gratifying to see the difference CASA volunteers make for so many children.”
